z(one)

cotton thread on paper, 2020

How do we connect when we are separated by invisible or arbitrary boundaries?

z(one) was made in response to asking questions around borders, the physical and psychological gaps blocking a sense of togetherness and kinship.

This piece was made during the aftermath of the EU Referendum in the UK and the ensuing shifts that Brexit has brought for all Europeans, particularly in the creative sector.

Taking inspiration from the coastlines of Britain, I divided and reconnected boundaries using cotton threaded lines, leaving enough of a gap to show broken separation, while still suggesting the subconscious network that remains - the organic shape of a path towards connection.
